NIKŠIĆ, MONTENEGRO – Montenegro has taken a decisive step toward energy independence with the official launch of the trial phase for the Gvozd wind farm. This project marks a historic milestone as the first major state-owned power generation facility constructed in the country in several decades.
Project Overview and Capacity Developed by the state-owned utility Elektroprivreda Crne Gore (EPCG), the Gvozd 1 facility represents an investment of approximately €82 million. The first phase of the park features a capacity of 54.6 MW and is projected to generate at least 141 GWh of renewable energy annually. Once the second phase is completed, the total capacity will reach 75.6 MW, making it the largest wind farm in Montenegro.
Economic and Environmental Impact Prime Minister Milojko Spajić, speaking at the launch ceremony, emphasized that the project was completed without the need for additional subsidies from citizens, operating instead on market principles.
- Household Power: The facility is expected to supply clean energy to approximately 35,000 households.
- Carbon Reduction: The project is estimated to save roughly 104,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions every year.
- Strategic Shift: The wind farm is a central component of Montenegro’s strategy to diversify its energy mix and reduce its historical reliance on thermal coal assets.
Construction was completed ahead of schedule, signaling a “new chapter” in the nation’s green transition and economic development.
