MODENA, Italy — Maserati may rethink its long-term electrification roadmap as shifting market dynamics and buyer preferences push high-performance manufacturers back toward internal combustion engines.
While the Italian luxury brand previously signaled a total transition into electric vehicles with its all-electric Folgore lineup, demand in the six-figure supercar segment remains tied to traditional mechanical powertrains. Supercar buyers continue to prioritize the sensory engagement and performance of internal combustion engines over silent electric alternatives.
Speaking in an interview with Australian automotive publication Carsales, Davide Danesin, Head of Engineering at Maserati, acknowledged that eight-cylinder engines could make a comeback.
“My personal opinion is yes—I think the V8 could potentially be coming back,” Danesin said. “I’m sure that if we were to make it, we would sell it, though likely not in large volumes.”
Any formal decision to reintroduce V8 engines will require greenlight approval from parent company Stellantis. Nevertheless, Danesin expressed optimism regarding the prospect, pointing to strong niche demand among enthusiast buyers for exclusive combustion-powered models.
